Description: Cultural competence begins with an awareness of one’s own culture, the factors and forces that shaped it and us and the means by which culture was imbued into the very fiber of our beings.  In this workshop, we will be examining our own cultures and, as a first step of awareness, having the opportunity to stand apart from our culture by comparing and contrasting our cultures with others.  (At this point, this last phase will be a more internal process noting that an open conversation comparing cultures can quickly become competitive and shaming.  This stage is intended to begin your own work on cultural awareness.)  The workshop will involve some introduction to cultural concepts and an open discussion and self examination of what our own culture is and how deeply it runs, its impact on our professional and personal lives.

Facilitators: Charles Pohl, LCSW, CGP, ISCSW Acting President & Treasurer and Eunice Stallman MD, a chief resident in psychiatry from the University of Washington at the Boise VA Medical Center.
